What is therapy?
As a therapist…
I tend to resonate with Humanistic Therapy.
I think therapy should be approachable and collaborative. I don’t think “good” therapy needs to be complicated. That’s just me, though. Not all therapy is, or should be, the same.
I think therapy is meant for a lifetime; not necessarily that we see a therapist for a lifetime, but that we participate in this process for as long as we’re alive.
I also don’t think everyone needs therapy. The journey we take and the relationships we make can look all sorts of ways. Therapy just happens to be one of them.
As a client…
You mostly just get to show up. Sort of.
The hard work will find you eventually. Trust me. That’s a part of “surrendering to the process” (I know, I know…) and reframing what it means to heal and grow.
You otherwise might be:
- a fellow people-helper (e.g. therapist, clergy, healthcare provider),
- interested in “men’s issues,”
- curious about regulating sexual behaviors (I am OCSB-informed),
- wondering how sexuality and faith are supposed to work together,
- navigating multiple and competing identities,
- experiencing anxiety and / or depression,
- and, finally, fed up with dating.
